Flourless Sweet Potato Brownies – Easy Healthy Brownie Recipe

What if your next brownie had sweet potato and banana instead of flour?

This is my new creative take on a classic brownie, and the result is surprisingly rich, soft, and fudgy. The roasted sweet potato and ripe banana provide natural sweetness and moisture, while cocoa gives the brownies that deep chocolate flavor we all love. Everything except the chocolate goes straight into the blender, making this recipe incredibly simple and leaving you with very little mess. I love recipes like this because they show just how creative you can be with everyday ingredients. The result is a soft, moist brownie that feels indulgent but has a very different base from a traditional brownie.

Note

Why is this brownie recipe so interesting?

The surprising ingredient here is sweet potato. Instead of using flour, butter, or a large amount of sugar, this recipe uses roasted sweet potato and banana to create a naturally moist and soft brownie base.

It’s a fun recipe to try if you enjoy experimenting with healthier versions of classic desserts or simply want to see what vegetables and fruit can do in baking.

🍠 Why use roasted sweet potato?

Roasted sweet potato has a naturally sweet flavor and creamy texture. Once blended, it creates a smooth batter and helps keep the brownies moist without needing a large amount of added fat.

Roasting also concentrates the sweet potato's natural flavor, making it particularly good for this type of chocolate dessert.

🍌 The banana adds sweetness and moisture

A ripe banana works especially well here because it adds natural sweetness while contributing to the soft texture. The riper the banana, the sweeter and more flavorful the brownie will be.

🍫 Don't skip the chocolate topping

The chopped chocolate on top is optional, but I highly recommend it. It melts into the surface during baking and creates little pockets of extra chocolate in every bite.

For a more intense chocolate flavor, use dark chocolate.

Is this a traditional brownie?

Not at all — and that's the fun part! This is my creative, flourless version of a brownie. It won't have exactly the same texture as a classic butter-and-flour brownie, but it is soft, moist, chocolatey, and satisfying in its own way.

How do I get a fudgier texture?

Don't overbake it. The center should still be soft when you take the brownie from the oven. It will continue to set as it cools.

Let it cool before slicing

It's tempting to cut into the brownie immediately, but giving it some time to cool allows the texture to firm up. For especially clean slices, let it cool completely.

Make it even more chocolatey

You can add extra chopped dark chocolate to the batter, chocolate chips, or a little melted chocolate on top after baking.

Spice it up

The gingerbread spice might seem unusual in a brownie, but it works beautifully with sweet potato, banana, and chocolate. If you prefer a more classic chocolate flavor, you can reduce it or replace it with cinnamon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expand All:

Is this sweet potato brownie gluten-free?

Yes, the ingredients in this recipe are naturally gluten-free. If you need to strictly avoid gluten, check the labels of your cocoa powder, spice mix, and chocolate to make sure they are certified gluten-free and free from cross-contamination.

Can I use a boiled sweet potato?

Yes, but roasted sweet potato is my preferred option because roasting removes some moisture and gives the sweet potato a deeper flavor. If using boiled sweet potato, make sure it is well drained and cooled before blending.
