These homemade Balkan slanci are soft, fluffy breadsticks that are even better than the ones from the bakery. They are a childhood favorite snack often packed for school breakfasts or enjoyed warm straight from the oven.

What makes them special is the soft dough combined with a buttery texture and a light salty crust on top. The dough is simple, but the technique of rolling, resting, and baking creates that perfect bakery-style result at home.

Salty Breadsticks

Ingredients
  

  • 600 g all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet dry yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 40 ml oil
  • 400 ml milk
  • Butter for brushing
PREAM COATING
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1/3 tsp baking soda
  • 4 tbsp water

Method
 

  1. Mix flour, yeast, sugar, salt, milk, and oil into a soft dough.
  2. Knead and let it rise for 30 minutes.
  3. Divide dough into 10 equal pieces.
  4. Roll each piece into a thin oval shape.
  5. Brush with softened butter and roll into breadstick shape.
  6. Let rest for 20 minutes.
  7. Brush with milk and bake at 180°C for 15 minutes.
  8. Mix all coating ingredients and put into a piping bag.
  9. Spray slanci with the coating and bake for 1 more minute.
  10. Brush with a little oil at the end for shine.

Notes

Do not skip resting time—it makes them soft inside.
Butter between layers creates bakery-style texture.
Best eaten warm, fresh from the oven.
You can add sesame seeds for extra flavor.
